Digital Footprints
Digital Footprints
Leaving Footprints
Have you ever been on the beach?
What happens when you walk in the sand and look back?
You leave a footprint impression in the sand.
The impression shows others where you came from.
...and then, slowly, they are erased by the waves.
Some people believe the same is true for anything you do on the internet.
They are WRONG.
Your footprint in the sand is erased by waves,
but your "digital footprint" is not erased.
It is more like leaving a footprint in wet cement and leaving it to dry.
Every website, game, blog, email, download, or text message leaves a digital footprint.
Click on the picture below and watch the video to learn how to leave a digital footprint you can be proud of.
Your digital footprint consists of three C's:
CONTACT
CONTENT
CONDUCT
You will complete lessons for talking about each C.
After you have completed a lesson, go on to the next lesson.
Once you have successfully completed each of the lessons
you will receive your Digital Passport to use the internet at school.
You may NOT use the internet for any "free time" activities or anything other than school related work until you have earned your license.

Lesson 2: CONTENT
DIGITAL CONTENT
Digital Content refers to anything stored on the internet.
Google announced in July, 2008 that there were more than one trillion websites.
That is a lot of information.
So, what does content have to do with being a good digital citizen?
There are two things you must realize about web content.
First, it is NOT all GOOD.
Anyone can post anything to the web. Some things on the internet can be harmful to you or to your computer.
When you come across something on the internet that makes you uncomfortable, immediately leave the computer and tell a trusted adult.
DO NOT go back to your computer until the adult has checked it out.
Second, it is NOT all TRUE!
Information found on websites is copyright material. That means someone created that page and owns it.
The copyright law states that the original creator is the only one with the right to use it.
If you want to use the material, you must get permission from the original owner.
There is a doctrine that may allow you to use the material without the owner's permission.
That doctrine is called Fair Use.
Watch the video below to learn about Fair Use.

Lession 3: CONDUCT
DIGITAL CONDUCT
Digital Conduct refers to how you behave on the internet. Most people recognize a bully when they see one in action. A bully is anyone who likes to make fun of other people. A bully who uses the internet to make fun of others is called a cyberbully. Some people think they can post things online without being known. That makes them feel like they do not have to behave in the same way they would in person. They say things online that they would not say face to face. Things posted on the internet have a much greater impact than things said or done face to face. Watch the video below to find out why.
